Developmental Language Disorders (DLD)
A Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a difficulty understanding and/or using spoken language that is not explained by hearing loss, intellectual disability, autism, or lack of exposure to language. Â
Â
Children with DLD may struggle to learn new words, follow directions, build sentences, understand or tell stories clearly. Due to difficulties with spoken language, they will also struggle to comprehend and use written language.
Â
Individuals with DLDÂ may also struggle with non-verbal aspects of communication, such as understanding figurative language and inferencing. These challenges can affect school, friendships, and daily life, but with early identification and targeted language therapy, children with DLD can make strong progress.
Literacy Disorders
Language and literacy disorders commonly co-occur and can have a reciprocal relationship, especially as a child gets older.Â
Â
Literacy disorders can involve challenges in word recognition, decoding, reading fluency, reading comprehension, spelling, and written expression. These deficits can also be a result of dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a common brain-based learning difference that makes reading, spelling, and sounding out words uniquely challenging. It exists on a spectrum and requires specialized, targeted instruction rather than typical classroom methods.Â
